Costa Rica has an incredible variety of plants, and people are attracted from all over the planet to the spectacular flowers that adorn the soil of the country. Of all the flowers, orchids are known to be the most attractive and interesting species here. In fact, Costa Rica has about 1300 species of orchids alone. The best time of the year for orchids in Costa Rica in all its wilderness glory is at the onset of the monsoons up with the first scant rains. Many of the orchids in nature flourish into their full bloom cycle during the rains. There are over 1300 recognized species of orchids in Costa Rica. They are small, big or flashy. A majority of the orchid species found in Costa Rica have great scents, though there are a few that smell downright repulsive. The variety of fragrances emitted by the different species can startle even the most discerning perfume enthusiast.

The National Orchid Exposition is known to be the best of the best Orchid shows in the country. Organized in March at San Jose each year, it brings all the flourishing orchids under a single roof from the best growers in Costa Rica. The show allows travelers to view a huge range of these flowers varying from the white orchids to the pale pinks the vibrantly hued violet ones. There are several competitions at the event that help you see some of the best of these spectacular floral species.

One of the best ways to explore these natural beauties is by taking a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide. A knowledgeable and experienced guide can take you into the natural habitats to witness some of the most indigenous orchid species in full bloom. Costa Rica’s stringent conservation laws and efforts at preserving native orchid species of the wild regions prevent people from taking away these flowers. The only thing travelers can actually take back as mementos of their orchid trips are pictures with the flowers in the backdrop still on the trees.

Some of the places to visit for an orchid exploration tour are the Lankester Botanical Gardens just east of Cartago. Another one’s the Wilson Botanical Gardens near San Vito de Java. These places can be seen best on day trips. There is also a garden in Palmares that is solely devoted to Costa Rica’s national flower.

Costa Rica has about 1400 species of orchids, more than any other Central American country and there are believed to be more that are awaiting discovery. Unlike temperate orchids, the vast majority of tropical species are epiphytes. They are omnipresent in Costa Rica and can be found everywhere from the coastal shorelines to the elevated mountain tops. They are spotted in huge numbers in the cloud forest, where haze and consistent rain offer them a perfect backdrop and weather conditions. Though there are several large and splendid looking orchids most are only miniature with spanning a few millimeters. Bees, wasps and flies pollinate a majority of the orchids but hummingbirds are responsible for pollinating a few cloud forest species here. It is popularly believed that the white flowers are responsible for generating nectar.

Epiphytes grow extensively in the rain or cloud forest, where plenty of rain and mist throughout the year create perfect conditions to help them flourish. Ferns and budding plants grow on the trunks of the trees in an exceptionally varied mixture of hues and sizes. Out of these, a majority belong to the orchid, bromeliad and gesnereaceas families. The Guaria Morada, Costa Rica’s national flower is an orchid species with big, striking looking flowers that is perpetually been exploited to create newer hybrid species.

There are many places in Costa Rica where these beautiful flowers can be seen up clase and personal. The Monteverde orchid garden is one such place that features an extensive collection of orchids. They have over 400 different species of orchids. Each species is distinguished with its scientific name. One can find a collection endemic species in Monteverde along with a collection of miniature orchids including the tiniest one on earth. They offer guided walks in English and Spanish along with guided tours with expert, knowledgeable and experienced guides that can last anywhere between 25 and 40 minutes.

The main steps in caring for orchids, especially those cultivated in flowerpots involves abundant light, though not direct blazing sunlight. This is mandatory for created top quality blooms. Watering the plants moderately so as to prevent the roots from rotting. It is important to fertilize these blooms two weeks with a diluted fertilizer to prevent the roots from destruction. Controling insects and avoiding damages caused by funguses and bacteriais also crucial. There are several effective insecticides, fungicides and antibiotics that can be sued to protect your blooms from potential pests. It is also in the best interests of your cultivation that you destroy the blooms that are infected with a virus since there’s no cure for certain viruses.

White Capuchin Monkeys

Capuchin monkeys, also called white-faced monkeys, occupy the wet lowland forests on Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and Panama and deciduous dry forest on the Pacific coast along with other wild animals in the jungles here. They are indigenous to Central and South America and can be regularly seen in many of Costa Rica’s national parks. Capuchins have small, slender bodies covered in brown or black fur. Their faces, necks and chests are typically white or cream colored that has led to them being christened the white-faced monkeys.

These White capuchin monkeys are rather distinguishable in appearance from other Central American primates. They feature a black body with white upper chest and shoulders, and a stark pale face with a black cap on their skull. They are diurnal and arboreal by nature, and can regularly be seen utilizing their prehensile tails and powerful limbs to sway between trees. The average group size is about 15 per group, with an adult alpha male leading the troop. Females have one baby every 1 to 2 years, who is cared for by the mother for the first 5 or 6 months of its life.

Capuchins are said to have one of the most varied diets of New World monkeys. Aside from resting, all their time is spent moving about and foraging, starting at daybreak and traveling about until night. They forage from the forest floor to the canopy, and their troop can spread really far for the purpose of foraging. They will also make the journey to spring or other sources when they are thirsty. Their actions are known to have a deep impact on the vegetative populations in their habitats. They may do this by dispersing seeds of some species, stimulating branching by their pruning activities, and devouring insects that would otherwise destroy plants.

The diet of Capuchins are primarily insectivorous, but have a diet broad beyond insects – fruits, flowers, invertebrates, as well as the less frequent bird eggs, bird hatchlings, nestling squirrels, and small lizards. They will eat plant material some times as well. The insects they consume include butterfly larvae, ants, cicadas, grasshoppers, and others. These omnivores are highly discerning about their food. They prefer eating ripe fruits, swallowing the juice and flesh, and spitting out the unwanted parts.

Spider Monkeys

The spider monkey species formerly was earlier abundantly spotted all over Costa Rica and was prevalent in several parts of Central America. Off late, owing to poaching and deforestation, it is limited to regions with jungle belts big enough to hold its large troops. Since Spider Monkeys are one of the largest New World primate species, they have become more susceptible to hunting. Spider monkeys tend to stay high off the ground in the canopy of tropical forests. This species contains 9 subspecies based on their color. The color of the back, shoulders, and tail ranges from blonde to black based on the subspecies. Costa Rica is home to a couple of these subspecies. Spiders are the most agile of the Costa Rican monkeys. They prance through trees utilizing their forelimbs and tail. The Spider’s legs are long and slender, and they possess the most prehensile tails of all Costa Rican primates that supports their entire weight.

Spider Monkeys utilize their tails like a fifth limb with which they can manage their entire weight. They are rarely known to leave the place they primarily inhabit, and feed constantly on foliage, nuts and fruits. They communicate with each other through gestures. Beware, they are known to scare off humans who try to intrude into their habitat by shaking branches heartily to scare the trespasser away. If even this turns out to be ineffective, they vociferously hurl huge branches at the prowler.

The Spider Monkey’s group dynamics are known to be highly complicated and can fluctuate several times through the day. They tend to subdivide into small groups, often into clans of 2 to 3 individuals, and also mini troops within the troop with an adult male, a few adult females and their young. During the end of the day, the subgroups meet up as a single unit that comprises many adult males, juvenile males, adult females and their babies. Their total group size is approximately 20 individuals. Other than coming together into the big group at certain trees, spider monkeys also forage independently or in their tinier groups. These primate species almost exclusively feed on fruits, but sometimes they will supplement their fruit diet with nascent leaves for more protein.

Mantled Howler Monkeys

Howlers live in the elevated forest canopies of lowland and montane forests. In Costa Rica, they are found at the La Selva, Corcovado National Park, Santa Rosa National Park, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve; may also be found in San Jose and San Vito. Howlers are famous for the cacophonous vocalizations produced by adult males. Their howls can be heard up to a couple of kilometers away through the forest. They often make these calls at sunrise or in reply to other sounds such as airplanes and thunder, or other howlers. Some biologists have found out that their howling is nothing but a means to communicate within the troop. An adult male howler weighs up to 6 to 7 kg; an adult female about 4 to 5 kg. Howlers have prehensile tails longer than their body length. At birth, the infant howlers weigh about 0.4 kg.

The Mantled Howler Monkey is indigenous to Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama. The Mantled Howler Monkey is synonymous with Costa Rica’s wildlife and is among the most frequently spotted primates in several Central American national parks, including Manuel Antonio, Corcovado National Park, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Santa Rosa National Park. They are generally found on the shelters of the low land and mountainous regions of Costa Rica, though it is common to see them everywhere including when you’re enjoying an outdoor breakfast at your chic vacation resort. Mantled howler monkeys are omnipresent in Costa Rica.
Mantled Howler females gain ripe sexuality at 3 years.

They pass through a regular estrus cycle for 16 days, and they exhibit skin transformation, generally related to swelling of the skin and a change in the labia minora color from white to light pink. A female mantled howler monkey generally indulges in multiple mating before conception. The age of sexual maturity for howler males is about 40 months, but the mating process for males trying to breed in non-maternal groups may be prolonged until they elevate themselves to the required social status. In some places, they will act as your wake up call. Despite being notorious for their cacophonous cries, howlers are known to be surprisingly quietly and movers. They are known to rest for a major part of the day.

The Mantled Howler Monkey group usually comprises several adult males and females, with their juveniles and infants, although juveniles usually leave their parents’ group eventually. At 12 weeks, howlers are known to move away from their parents. A female will become sexually active at 3 years, and have her first infant before her fourth year, with a gestation period of 6 months. The adult males are known to dominate the group but the youngest adult of either sex holds the much coveted alpha rank for that sex. The Howler Monkey’s average group size varies from 11 to 18 depending on the region. They are almost never spotted on the group and stay put on the canopies. Howlers are relatively common within the Costa Rican forest canopies, hotels, eco resorts and national parks.

Squirrel

Squirrel monkeys make their homes in the tropical evergreen forests, mangroves, and secondary forests. In Costa Rica, the squirrel monkey is spotted only in the Pacific lowlands and southern part of Costa Rica. Some are as small as 5-6 monkeys per group, while others as large as several dozen (at a times a hundred monkeys per groups). Several adult males join a single troop, and there are normally four adult females for every male in a group. Females give birth to single babies at a time after a 5-6 month gestation period.

Tourism and farming have collectively contributed to drastically affecting Costa Rica’s depleting population of squirrel monkeys. How they managed to get Costa Rica and breed and live in isolation from their band, the closest of which is hundreds of miles away is still not fathomed by biologists. This isolation, though, has turned them into vulnerable and destructive creatures, and in recent decades their numbers have plunged significantly.

All of Costa Rica’s squirrel monkeys are part of the endangered lot, but their subspecies found near the Manuel Antonio is virtually extinct. There are less than a thousand of them left in Costa Rica now when some decades ago the number was three to four times more than that. Deforestation, habitat destruction and their isolation have all played a part in the near extinction of these intriguing species.

Centuries ago Cocos Island was the hidey-hole for pirates, the hub of explorers and sailors and the much publicized inspiration for literary classics such as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. There are tales aplenty of the elusive buried treasures of Edward Davis in 1685, Benito Bonito, and William Thompson in the early 19th century, which even if they left have not been traced yet.

Cocos Island National Park is located at the tip of an ancient volcanic mountain secluded by the surrounding Pacific. It has been colonized over several centuries and is enclosed by a blanket of dense rainforest. Several species found here have evolved after they came here, transforming into unique indigenous forms that cannot be seen anywhere on earth. These species are known as endemics.

The Coco’s Island National Park is isolated in the vast expanse of the ocean. The nearest land is Costa Rica 360 miles to the east. The Galápagos Islands are the closest neighbors, some hundred miles down the southwest side. The island was actually created during a volcanic turmoil about a couple of million years ago and comprises primarily of basaltic rock, turmoil and andesite lava flows. Its landmass is interspersed by four mountain peaks, the highest of which is the Cerro Iglesias, at about 2,000 feet above the sea.

Ccoso features only two bays with safe anchorages and balmy sandy beaches. The Chatham is located on the northeast side while Wafer Bay is to its northwest region. Owing to the almost surreal marine life hosted in azure waters, Cocos Island has earned the title of one of the ten best scuba diving spots on the earth by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and is on the bucket list of most diving experts.

Known for its spectacular biodiversity, Cocos Island is also home to at least 27 endemic fish species including the much sought after batfish. The terrestrial life at Cocos also displays a high number of endemic species. There are some 70 of the 235 identified vascular plant species in the world, about 25 species of moss, 27 species of liverwort and approximately 85 species of fungus. The island houses about 90 bird species, including the Island cuckoo and flycatcher. There are about 350 species of insects, of which 64 are indigenous. The island has two native reptiles inhabiting it.

This Island’s world famous cerilean waters are filled with diverse specimens of marine life, including several white tip reef sharks, schooling hammerhead sharks, dolphins, mantas and marbled rays, giant moray eels, sailfish, and the one off whale shark. Other regularly spotted species here include large schools of jacks and tuna, silky sharks, silver tip sharks, marlin, Creole fish, green turtles and octopus.

The foremost visitors to the island left pigs on the island as a self- fulfilling source of meat. Until the current day pigs and deer inhabit the island, much to the destruction of the island’s native nesting birds. These terrestrial creatures are also responsible for facilitating soil erosion by constant digging.

Diving off Cocos Island is suitable for the more experienced diver. There are thermoclines and swellings that cause a significant variation in temperature, while erratic currents and surface chops are also frequently present in this region. Visibility varies 25 metres up to 40 metres and dive depths usually range from 15-35 metres, though there are some deeper dives. Because the average dive depth is deeper than usual, liveaboards normally feature four dives per day at Cocos (including a night dive). The main attractions here for divers are the large pelagic species, which are spotted abundantly in this unusual center point between the deep and not so deep waters. The largest schools of hammerhead sharks on the planet are regularly reported here. Smaller and more vibrant species are also spotted in one of the most extensive and verdant reefs of the south eastern Pacific.

Manuelita Coral Garden is one of the most popular dive sites on the island. This is the favorite spot for most divers here and faces the composed waters of Chatham Bay. The well-preserved site witnesses minimal current or swells and supports a lovely garden at depths ranging from 20 to 70 feet, which is a delight for underwater photography buffs. Innumerable fish, eels, lobsters and other critters are inhabitants of the hard coral reef and the adjoining sand slope. Big fish frequently visit this site, including hammerheads, black tip sharks, white tip sharks and marble rays. Large schools of white tip sharks can also be spotted feeding at dark. This one’s super for night dives.

In contrast, Bajo Dos Amigos is a challenging diver’s bastion. It is seamount site shaped like a crown and is the only place here where black coral colonies can be watched at secure depths, from 100 and 130 feet. Due to the strong currents normally found here, this isn’t an easy diving site. The Submerged Rock site offers vibrant scenery creating along with exceptional photo opportunities at depths between 50 to 70 feet. This high point serves as a hotbed for white tip sharks, where one can unfailingly spot the baby sharks and their mothers.

Dirty Rock (not so dirty and by no means a rock is an island), also known as Pietra Socia or Boat Rock, is situates in the northern region of Cocos and about a kilometre from the main island. Rich currents flow through the area and form the foundation of a food chain that attracts several sharks and fish populations. This spot acts as the tiara on the Cocos Island crown of the Cocos as it houses one of the highest populations of Scalloped Hammerheads. Divers here go down through a virtually infinite cloud of Pacific Creolefish, though the sharks can be witnessed rotating beneath. Below 25 metres large loose schools of Scalloped Hammerheads move around, prancing off in all sides and then coming together again lose to the diver.

Surf Spots in the Pacific Coast

The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica has many awesome spots for both beginner and professional surfers. The waves are mostly regular, smooth and consistent throughout the year.

Dominical

Dominical is a quiet oceanfront town with a relaxed ambiance. It is great for surfers who are looking for an uncrowded place. The surf is mainly beach break with sand bottoms and shallower swells. For bigger swells, head towards the southern end of the beach where there is a point break with larger waves. The good months to surf are from May to October.

Ollie’s Point

Ollie’s Point is in Santa Rosa National Park and can be accessed by a boat only. You will have to pay the fees in order to enter the park.

Costa Rica is rich in natural resources in the forms of seascapes, landscapes and wildlife. Aside from the country’s rich geographical qualities such as tropical jungles and glorious beaches, Costa Rica is also blessed with a great biodiversity.

The blessed isle of Costa Rica is home to the Harpy Eagle. Considered as one of the largest and most powerful birds known, the Harpy Eagle was named after Hades’ wind spirits for its strength and agility. The Harpy Eagles are carnivores and are known to snatch up a monkey, a sloth or a porcupine from treetops for sustenance. They have black feathers but their undersides are covered in white. A typical female Harpy Eagle weighs about six to nine kilograms while its male counterpart weighs to only about four to five kilograms. Harpy Eagles are recently considered as near threatened. The destruction of their habitats such as deforestation and logging has made this particular species almost extinct. According to some travelogues, some of the Harpy Eagles can be seen in the Corcovado area.

The medium sized mammals called sloths are mostly prey to the Harpy Eagles and can also be found in Costa Rica’s jungles. These creatures are known to spend their time sleeping for more than eighteen hours a day. Two types of sloths can be found in Costa Rica, the commonly seen three-toed sloth and the nocturnal two-toed sloth. Three-toed sloths are considered herbivores while the two-toed sloths are omnivores preying on leaves, tender shoots, insects and small reptiles. Due to the endangerment of these species, sanctuaries, like the Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica, have been built to help protect them from further extinction.

Costa Rica is also known for their jungle wild cats. The country is actually home to six species of wild cats from the largest to the smallest—the Jaguar, Jaguarundi, Puma, Ocelot, Margay Cat and Tigrillo. Jaguars are the largest carnivores weighing 56 to 96 kilograms. They have the recorded lengths to about 1.62 to 1.83 metres with its tail even adding about 75 centimetres to its total body length. The smallest wild cat growing to about 38 to 59 centimetres is called the Tigrillo or Oncillo.

The Jaguarundi is a medium sized wild cat that is also called Leoncillo, which means little lion. Sometimes they are also called otter cats. They have short round ears, short legs and elongated body and tail and from afar, they look like otters. The Puma, also known as mountain lion or cougar, is the fourth largest cat in the world with the body length of 1.5 to 2.75 metres. They are best known for their hunting skills. The Margay cat and Ocelot are two different species of cats that look similar. Both are medium sized cats that have similar features with the domestic cat. Their fur normally comes in brown fur with either spots or stripes of black, white or dark brown in them.

Most of these animals can only be seen in Costa Rica’s rich and diversified jungles. Currently, their numbers are slowly decreasing due to numerous deforestation and pollution. But the people of Costa Rica are doing everything they can to preserve and help these wild animals.

Southern Nicoya Peninsula

Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula has been a top tourist destination for some time. It’s famous for its unspoiled beaches. One can enjoy beaches such as Montezuma, Tamarindo and Santa Teresa. Montezuma can be found at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. It has been known as the “Bohemian Beach” since Bohemian-inspired travelers often come to Montezuma. There are also tide pools and hidden waterfalls to enjoy within the beach town.

Tamarindo

The Tamarindo beach area is a haven for world-class travelers. It has now grown into a traveler’s paradise since it has been developed to accommodate tourists’ every need. Restaurants and supermarkets have opened nearby the beach for the tourists’ convenience. Aside from swimming, travelers can enjoy coastal activities such as zip-lining, snorkeling, surfing and fishing.
