Description

Playa Hermosa is a beautiful beach found just north of Santa Teresa. It was originally known as San Martin but due to its panoramic beauty, tourists began to refer to it as Playa Hermosa, The Beautiful Beach, and the perfect name stuck. The beach is widely undeveloped and remains a secluded and beautiful platform for various adventurous and leisure activities.

It offers snorkeling, swimming, sun bathing, hiking and so many other fun things. Just like its neighboring beaches, Playa Hermosa boasts a great surf spot. It has a beach break that goes to both left and right from the center and to the north, a fantastic point break can be found. The best time to surf the beach break is at a mid tide while the point break can be surfed any time of the day. When the tide is high, the beach vanishes and the surf closes out.

There are several sandy coves and rocky tide pools that are usually deserted. At Playa Hermosa, have a romantic stroll, a lazy picnic or surf to your heart’s content.

Other Activities

Playa Hermosa might come across as a sleepy town but it has a lot to offer. Excursions, be it half day or full day, can be a bit expensive but worth the money. Sail into the dazzling sunset and enjoy the marvelous beauty of sparkling shores. You might catch a glimpse of dolphins and whales during the trip. Many tour companies and charters offer sailing trips. Go on to a hiking trip, bird watching tours, canopy and zip lining adventures and so much more. Aquatic sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, sport fishing and kayaking are also awesome here. Be it surfing or any other activity you want to try, Playa Hermosa will not disappoint you.

Places to Stay

There are several accommodations in Playa Hermosa. The northern region of the beach features a number of luxury hotels while the southern end has lodging suitable for all sorts of budgets. You will find a number of surf camps, hotels, rental villas and a few stores. The center of the town is referred to as Playa Hermosa Valley. It has an international school where many kids from Hermosa and nearby towns go to. From the beach, you can access Manzanillo, Cobano and Playa Carmen readily.

Description

Playa Grande is a sublime beach in Montezuma, in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. It is often confused with another famous beach of the same name located near Tamarindo. The beach of Montezuma is a superb holiday destination for tourists who are looking for a serene yet fun getaway. The beach has a great surf spot that works best during mid and high tides with swells coming from the south. It is about 30 minutes walk away from Montezuma to the north. The spot has ideally consistent waves suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. Every morning, many surfers come to the beach hoping to catch a set of perfect waves.

Other Activities

Playa Grande is quite a huge beach in comparison to other beaches on the southern Nicoya Peninsula. The beach gets even bigger during the low tides. It is blessed with scenic vistas of silvery white sands, swaying tropical trees and sparkling shorelines. You can surf, swim, hike, leisure and have picnics with your loved ones. Some popular places such as Montezuam waterfalls, Ylang Ylang Resort, Piedra Colorada, Nicolás Wessberg Natural Reserve and Romelia Wildlife Refuge are located nearby the beach. From Playa Grande, you can access many other beaches of Montezuma.

Playa Grande is right on the doorstep of Montezuma. There has been a rumor that clothing on the beach is optional which can only be confirmed by going there. Hikers, surfers and swimmers are its most loyal visitors. On a very hot day, you can beat the heat by taking a dip into one of the cool rocky tide pools scattered around the beach. Playa Grande and its tranquility is superb for couples. The sandy coastline provides an idyllic setting for romantic strolls and its remoteness gives off an intimate vibe that appeal to the people. Moreover, the cascading waterfalls of Montezuma empty into the ocean right at the edge of the beach. The waterfalls are encircled by several natural springs.

The beach is in a very remote area and people usually have difficulty locating it. If you are lucky, you may come across it by chance. Amazing for rejuvenation and hideaways, the tropical beach of Montezuma is one of the best beaches of Costa Rica.

Description

Located on the southern end of Nicoya Peninsula, Cabuya is a picturesque village where you can spend a quiet getaway. Cabuya is nearby all the tourist attractions. Whether you want to visit the Montezuma’s cascading waterfall, wish to catch the waves of Santa Teresa or explore the wildlife of Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, the beach village has an idyllic location. Moreover, Cabuya has got some quaint attractions itself. It features a small cemetery island by the name of Isla de Cabuya found only a few meters away from the coastline. The rare isle is from the pre-Columbian time and it is still used as a burial ground. On the extreme end of this island there is a reef spot with rocky tide pools great for snorkeling, surfing and swimming.

On the Cabuya Island, there is a ‘secret’ surf spot on the right side of the beach. It is a heavy point break that goes to the left and requires big swells from the south to work. The break is unpopular as it is faraway and inconsistent. During the low tide, it is possible to walk out to the spot. You can also hire a boat from Montezuma or Cabuya to take you directly to the break. If you happen to be in the area, Cabuya’s point break might offer an awesome platform for surfing.

Los Reyes is a surf spot found just before Cabuya Bridge at the Rio Lajas Rivermouth. It is a right handed point break on the inside of the peninsula. Although, the waves are great to surf, accessing the spot is not. To reach the break, you need to walk 100 meters or so over a sharp rocky base.

Surf Camps

Popular surf camps located nearby Cabuya include:

Anamaya in Montezuma
La Escuela del Sol in Cabuya
Rancho Delicioso in Delicias

Things to do in Cabuya

Cabuya is a gateway to a heavenly Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. The park provides visitors a great base to try out numerous activities. Hiking on the mountainous tracks, bird watching, beach combing, zip lining and so many other sporty stuff is possible. The rivermouth of Rio Lajas is not just great for surfing but also offers a glimpse of wonderful tropical birds such as kingfishers, herons, toucans and roseate spoon bills! On hot days, you can also take a quick swim! For accommodations, Cabuya features places perfect for everyone; be it luxury, mid range or budget friendly. There are few restaurants and sodas in Cabuya that serve both international and traditional Costa Rican cuisines.

Description

Playa Manzanillo is a sublime white sand beach located just north of Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. Unlike its nearby towns, Santa Teresa and Mal Pais, Manzanillo still remains a quiet and secluded place brimming with tranquility and tropical beauty. The family oriented beach is renowned for its sport opportunities, amazing nature and peaceful atmosphere.

The northern end of Playa Manzanillo features an offshore reef break which is somewhat inconsistent and unreliable. The waves break to the right and left over a reef rocky bottom. The break requires strong swells from northwest and west to work. The exposed break is best ridden when the offshore wind blows from the northeast. Groundswells from the northwest and west are more common than windswells. Watch out for rip currents and rocks.

Surf Camps

Surf Camps found in and around Play Manzanillo are Kelea Surf Spa, Adrenalina Surf Camp, Oasis Mal Pais, The Green Rooms, Azul Surf Camp, Pura Vida Adventures, Costa Rica Surf and Spanish Camp, Blue Surf Sanctuary, Surf Costa Rica, Gumbo Limbo Ocean Villas, Mariposa Vacation Homes, Lucero Surf Retreats and Hotel Meli Melo.

How to Get to Playa Manzanillo

Playa Manzanillo is located a short drive away from Santa Teresa. The beach can be readily accessed by driving through the Highway 160 or through a by taking a ferry ride from Puntarenas to Paquera or Playa Naranjo. If you are in San Jose or Liberia, just take a plane to Tambor which is nearby Manzanillo.

The Town and Accommodations

Playa Manzanillo does not actually have a town but a small Tico hamlet of the same name situated a few kilometers away. It is a small settlement that offers an authentic glimpse of Costa Rica’s culture and traditions. The hamlet has two or three restaurants and cantinas where you can have a delicious traditional meal. The most famous accommodations of Manzanillo are Ylang Ylang Beach Resort and a vacation rental named Casa Noche del Mono. They are located right on the beach. Every year in the month of March, Sandcastle Contest is held in Manzanillo. At dawn, people from all over the country visit the beach and build creative sandcastles. The competition ends at nighttime and then celebrations begin. Swimmers, snorkelers, divers, explorers and nature lovers will find Manzanillo a perfect and wonderful beach.
