Playa Chiquita Riding Adventures is a horseback riding school based in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. The Caribbean adventure begins at Playa Chiquita de Talamanca, followed by going north to Puerto Viejo or south to Manzanillo. The school also offer rides to local restaurants and special events. The riding expeditions are suitable for people of all ages and skills. Join Playa Chiquita Riding Adventures to explore the scenic jungles, ride along the pristine coastline, enjoy the sounds of waves crashing against the shore and have encounters with tropical creatures.

Playa Chiquita Riding Adventures is managed by Bruce Walker who decided to move to Costa Rica in 2010 in order to achieve his dream of starting a horse riding business. Bruce found the coastal town of Puerto Viejo purely beautiful and cordial. He wandered through the sun-kissed sandy beaches bordering the Caribbean Sea and traversed the forests flourishing with all kinds of flora and fauna. He opened up his school in a hope to teach horseback riding in an enjoyable way, to enable guests to appreciate the beauty of the nature and to make their tropical way truly inspiring and magical.

Horseback Riding Tours

Playa Chiquita Riding Adventures is located in the beach town of Playa Chiquita de Talamanca right next to Shawandha Lodge. The school has a family friendly atmosphere, follows eco-conscious principles and its doors open right onto the sun baked beach! Be it a kid or an adult, a novice or an expert; the tours are for everyone! While teaching, the staff likes to take things slowly and is patient and helpful. The main reason for the tour is to have pure fun, enjoy the salty breeze of the sea and check out the sultry foliage which is why there is no rush! Ride your horse at a leisurely pace, make friends with other travelers and stop to take pictures with sloths and monkeys and observe the flights of brilliantly colored birds. Vacationers can choose to join either half day tours or 2 and a half hours long tour. For beginners, there are free riding lessons too!

Surfing, Kayaking and Other Activities

Vacationers can try several more activities besides horseback riding. Playa Chiquita Riding Adventures organizes kayaking tours held in Playa Chiquita. These tours are quite a thrill as the sea kayaks come with a window at the bottom allowing people to look into the deep blue sea, stunning coral reefs and the plethora of tropical fish. Puerto Viejo and its nearby beaches are popular for their surf breaks. Wave enthusiasts can rent a surfboard from any surf shop and head out to ride the waves. The school offers fishing tours and massage sessions as well.

Description

Playa Negra, also known as the black beach, is a 15 kilometers long found in Cahuita. The beach break is located just north of Puerto Viejo offering a set of sloppy waves for newbies and intermediate surfers. The break is consistent throughout the year. The waves are regular, rather sloppy and break to the left and right over a sandy bottom. When the break picks up swells from east and northeast, the waves tend to get hollow and break far outside. The best time to surf is at a high tide with the wind coming from southwest and west direction. Most of the times, the waves range up to 50 meters but on good days, they can even be 100 meters high! It does have a great night life, bars, boutiques, restaurants, surf shops and a nice range of hotels. One great way to explore the town is to rent a bike and ride it around the town. Besides surfing, Playa Cocles is known for its Cahuita National Park presenting a Costa Rica’s largest coral reef system, Talamanca Indian Reserve and Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge sheltering a huge number of wildlife and mangrove swamps. Travelers can also enjoy mountain biking, kayaking, sport fishing and wildlife tours. It is also one of the few beaches in Costa Rica which has lifeguard services. The atmosphere of Cocles is very cordial so tourists feel at ease.

Playa Cocles features a beach break that peels to right and left over a sandy bottom. The waves are very long riding up to 300 meter and real fun to ride when the tide is high. The break is not very consistent and tends to close out when big surfs get hollow. The waves break quite close to the beach. The beach has a steep entry and when good swells are picked, the waves increase in size. The beach break is great for intermediate and advanced surfers. Even though the wind blows all day long and improves surf condition, the best time to ride the waves is in the early morning. There are many rip currents and undertows in the water so be careful.

Description

Salsa Brava is one of the most challenging and dangerous surf spots in the world. Found on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, the thrilling surf spot draws thousands of surf enthusiasts from all over the world. Puerto Viejo is a small coastal village located in Limon Province. Offering a variety of adventurous activities, the town has become a tourist hot spot in the recent years. While hardcore surfers spend their time riding the sensational waves, non-surfers can indulge in many other sporty activities. Salsa Brava is a dream come true for any wave rider. It is said to be the most powerful break in Costa Rica. The name of legendary break is roughly translated as ‘angry sauce’ which quite suits it. Salsa Brava is a powerful and heavy reef break boasting a Hawaiian style barrels and juice. The break is definitely not for novices and intermediate surfers. It is only suitable for seasoned and professional surfers. Beginners can surf in other spots located nearby the break. The waves are good to ride throughout the year but the months between December and March offer the biggest surf.

The notorious Salsa Brava is a right hand reef break featuring fast, hollow and powerful waves. It breaks over a sharp reef bottom. It is recommended that surfers wear helmets for protection. The waves are very consistent and mostly short ranging from 50 to 150 meters. The epic waves team up with big swells from the east and winds from the south creating a strong and heavy Hawaiian style barrel waves. The surf develops in deep water and bursts over a shallow reef with a fast and long right. The swells build up at 5 feet holding up to more than 16 feet.

Salsa Brava has a few drawbacks. The road to Puerto Viejo is difficult to access but if you really wish to brave the waves then it is worth a trouble. The break is always super crowded on weekends and weekdays alike. Again, you can wait patiently for your turn to ride. There are many rocks, undertows and rips so watch out for them. If you overlook these three obstacles, Salsa Brava is quite awesome and fun.

Surf Camps

There are many surf camps in Puerto Viejo that offer surf lessons in Salsa Brava. Crocodile Surf Camp and Beachfront Cabins is a budget friendly surf camp which has been in the business since 2008. For advanced surfers, Tamandua Surf Lodge, located minutes away from Salsa Brava is great. Totem Hotel Beach Resort, Surf For Life and Puerto Viejo Surf Adventures are also great. You will also find many surf shops along the beach from where you can rent or buy a surfboard and other gear.
