Description

Barco Quebrado is a beautiful beach nestled in a cove encircled by cliffs, rocks and dense forests. The beach is located in Limon Province of Costa Rica just north to another beautiful beach called Barrigona. Playa Barco Quebrdo is situated approximately 9 kilometers away from Playa Garza. The beach is well known for its mystical beauty, swimming, diving opportunities and surfing. The area is very secluded until you get near to Cahuita National Park. Surfers, be it beginners, intermediate or veterans, can have a fabulous time here.

Barco Quebrado features a rivermouth at Rio del Banano which remains consistent throughout the year. The waves are regular, fairly short and quite fun to ride. They ride up to 50 meters breaking over a sandy bottom. They ride to left and right but favor the rights more. The waves are best ridden when the wind blows from the southwest and nice swells are picked from the northeast, east and southeast. The swells can hold up to 6 feet. Windswells are more common than groundswells. Watch out for rip currents, undertows and jellyfishes.

As mentioned before, the beach is just north to another beautiful beach called Barrigona. Playa Barrigona is a 500 acres of private jungle nestled in an isolated area on the Nicoya Peninsula. The villas on the respite are owned by a famous Hollywood actor, Mel Gibson. There is a small, deserted white sand beach close by the jungle.

The break is consistent throughout the year and peels to the right over a reef bottom. To work Cocaine Point requires lots of swells from the north and northeast direction. Windswells are more than the groundswells and the wind direction is best from the southwest. The waves are regular, powerful and hollow riding up to 300 meters on good days. The surf is good to go during all tides. The waves are quite fun and easy to ride perfect for all sorts of surfers. The spot can get crowded sometimes usually on weekends. Watch out for rips, undertows and rocks.

Description

Isla Uvita, also known as Island of Small Grapes, is a secluded isle encircled by reef. It is located about 40 minutes boat ride away from Limon. The deserted island has a reef break with powerful, fast and hollows waves breaking to the left over a sharp and shallow reef bottom. The juicy barreling waves are known to get triple overhead without closing out. Their length range from 50 to 150 meters. The waves can get even bigger when the swells are picked up from Southeast, East and Northeast direction. Windswells are much more common than groundswells and the waves are best ridden when they come from the Northeast. The surf is bigger on the island than on the mainland which is why the reef break has gained popularity among wave riders. Due to the presence of many sharp rocks, the spot is potentially dangerous for beginners. Isla Uvita is only safe for experienced surfers. The island is completely undeveloped with no accommodations or shops. The spot may get crowded on weekends but the surf session is isolated most of the time. There are frequent rip currents, jelly fishes and sharp coral so be careful.

Tourists can also enjoy snorkeling, swimming and scuba diving on the island.

How to Get to Isla Uvita

People can only access Isla Uvita by a boat ride which is about twenty minutes away from Limon’s mainland. The island has no restaurants, hotels or any other facilities so it is better to come prepared. Camping on the sight is not allowed yet many people sometimes do camp out there.

Accommodations

If you wish to visit Isla Uvita, you can lodge in one of the accommodations in Limon. Some of the popular lodging options are Hotel Playa Westfalia, Laguna Lodge Hotel Limon, Hotel Playa Bonita, Cabinas El Oasis, Hotel & Country Club Suerre and Maribu Caribe Hotel.

The waves break to the left. The best time to surf the reef break is at a mid tide while for the beach break, high tide is great. The surf spot is inconsistent and requires a big swell to work. The best wind direction is from the south and southwest hemispheres. Windswells are more common than groundswells. Dry season offers the best surfing condition. The break is often very crowded. Watch out for rip currents, jellyfishes and sharp corals.

Limon is a doorway to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. The hip, bohemian culture of Costa Rica gets even more intense on the Caribbean region. Splashes of brilliant colors and a whimsical culture combine well with the region’s mysterious aura, imaginary hidden treasures and pirates. The capital of the Caribbean coast, Limon features six counties, which include Pococí, Guácimo, Siquirres, Matina, Puerto Limón, and Talamanca. Puerto Limon, founded in 1870, is a capital city of the province of Limon, and also a largest city of the region with a population of 85,000 people. The people are mostly of Afro-Caribbean ancestry. Limon acts as a main port from where cruise ships travel to from Panama Canal. The waterfront city has been hit by many earthquakes rendering it rundown. Still, the city is bustling with colorful outdoor markets, captivating olden architecture, a charming city hall and a number of quaint museums.

Puerto Limon is easily accessible. From San Jose, there is a direct highway that leads to the city’s coast. The journey is about 2.5 hours long if you are traveling by your own car. Limon is situated on a rocky cape which means the town does not have a proper beach, but about 4 km away; Playa Bonita is present which is nice enough for picnics and frolicking in the waves. Although the town is not exactly tourist oriented, the city has a unique appeal.

Surf Adventures in Puerto Limon
